About the project

Title of the Research Project : Use of Open Source Software for Teaching of Mathematics

Department / Board Area : Mathematics

Principal Investigator : Mrs. Manjusha S. Joshi

Summary of the project: Project consists of organizing four workshops (5 days) for popularization of Open Source Mathematical Software at the National level in the educational field. The aim of the workshops will be to familiarize the participants to Mathematical Software for teaching and learning of Mathematics.

Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana has vast experience of organizing such National workshops in the field of Mathematics, in an efficient manner and the institute has organized many such workshops earlier on LaTeX and Mathematical Software. More information about the institute is available at www.bprim.org

The organization of the four workshops will be spread over a period of one year. The announcement of the same will be done at the beginning of the year.

There will be 30-50 participants for each workshop. The workshops will deal with the Open Source Mathematical software such as Scilab, LaTeX, Gap, Maxima, Geogebra, Sage.

The workshops will be meant for College and University students and teachers. Sessions will involve installation of the software, lectures and lab sessions, under the guidance of expert faculty. It is also proposed to hold a few lecture series / workshops of smaller duration for local students and teachers on open source Mathematical Software.

Importance of project

  1. Colleges, although require mathematical software for learning, cannot run a course on such a software if they use commercial software, as they have to purchase license for many copies of the software and this is a loss of National money if a huge number of colleges wish to start such courses. Open source software is the real solution to this problem.

  2. Due to lack of knowledge about how to install the software, how to get the support for the software and how to motivate students as well teachers for the use of such a software, colleges are not yet able to use Open Source software and make them popular among the students. The project aims to help the teachers in these aspects.

  3. Due to the series of such workshops, College teachers as well as research students will come to know about the software handling, installation and various aspect of these tools. They will have a comfort feeling of the software by having practical sessions on it.

Set up of Computational lab of Open Source Mathematical software for workshops will put forth an example of such labs in colleges in near future. Till that time such a lab in the Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana will be available for the teachers.

  1. Objective: To make students and teachers familiar with Open Source Mathematical Software so that they can use it for their study, teaching and research in Mathematics/ other releted sciences.

  2. Methodology: We shall organized 4 national workshops on Open source Mathematical software such as LaTeX, Scilab, Gap, Maxima, SAGE, DrGeo. We shall also organize lecture series, discussion sessions, workshops for smaller duration for students and teachers in neighbouring colleges.
